Special rules regarding Denmark and Greenland

If you move between the Faroe Islands, Denmark and Greenland, you will be comparable to the citizens in that part of the United Kingdom of Denmark to where you move.

In other words, when you move to Denmark or Greenland you are entitled to either a Danish or Greenland pension providing you meet the conditions in the respective country. A person is not entitled to transport a Faroese pension if that person moves within the realm. When moving within the United Kingdom of Denmark, it is vitally important for the person concerned to be aware of the different retirement ages. For example, the pensionable age on the Faroe Islands is 67 whereas it is 65 in Greenland. If, for example you move from Greenland to the Faroe Islands as a 65-year old you will not be entitled to a Faroese pension until you reach the age of 67.

Moving from the Faroe Islands to Denmark

If you have been granted a Faroese old age pension you will transfer to a Danish old age pension if you move to Denmark. You do not need to apply for a Danish old age pension but your move needs to be notified to Almannastovan and the Danish municipality to where you are moving.

If you were granted a Faroese early retirement pension before 1 January 2003, i.e. before the Danish early retirement pension reform came into being, you will transfer to a Danish early retirement pension when you move to Denmark. You do not need to apply for a Danish early retirement pension but your move needs to be notified to Almannastovan and the Danish municipality to where you are moving.

If you are granted a Faroese early retirement pension after 1 January 2003 there is no automatic transfer to a corresponding Danish early retirement pension. If this is the case you must apply for a Danish early retirement pension according to the current Danish regulations. This application shall be submitted to the municipality to where you move. In this connection you need to be aware that you cannot apply for an early retirement pension before you have moved to Denmark. You must therefore be aware that a period of time may elapse from when you move to Denmark to when your early retirement pension case is processed when you are entitled only to cash assistance. You should therefore contact the Danish municipality to which you will be moving for more detailed advice and guidance.
